Nearly all the features first laid out by designer James Braid have been retained and S&A is a wonderful challenge of golf capped by its notorious Par 5 16th hole, known as Gumbley's. Walter Hagan was perhaps the first golfing legend to play S&A when he appeared in an exhibition match in 1926, and since then the likes of Henry Cotton, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and even Sean Connery have competed at the course.
